The Bug... boy or girl? What do you think?

Summertime fun!

On July 1st, Amy & Todd were in town visiting Todd's family so they came by for dinner! We enjoyed a taco dinner & relaxing! Schnitzel enjoyed playing with Abby! It was great to catch up with Amy & Todd. I'm a little sad though... Abby doesn't say "Aunt Karat" anymore... she's growing up!

On July 2nd, I had to have a Level 2 ultrasound (at this point I don't want to go into why but will say things are going to be okay). Amy got to go with me; this time the Bug was quite active & we got quite a show! We also got to see the 4D shots of him. At the 20 week ultrasound the placenta was in the way of his face so we couldn't see, but not the case for the 21 week ultrasound! He's still showing a week earlier as far as growth than his gestational age.

My smiling baby boy!

He kept smacking his lips like he was hungry!

The beginnings of peek-a-boo!

For the Fourth of July weekend, we went to Oak Island with the Taylors! Friday night we grilled out followed by beach time Saturday & Sunday. Saturday night we went to Southport to watch some fireworks! It was wonderful to get away with wonderful friends!

I'm 22 weeks now... the time is just flying by! I have been feeling a lot more movement & I'm loving it! Over the weekend Christopher was able to feel a kick and we also were able to see a little kick poke out... kind of strange & hilarious moment! The Bug has eyelids, eyebrows, and fingernails now.
The baby bump is growing... people don't look as scared when they ask how far along I am anymore! This part of the pregnancy has been easier than the first part. I do have the "stretched" belly pains from ligaments, etc but usually going for a walk helps that! Sleeping is still okay; I will say that I slept on my side before I was pregnant so I'm hoping that will help third trimester sleep issues! Bending over/down and getting up is definitely not as easy... teaching over summer school with little people has shown me that! It's definitely easier to sit to put on shows, put Schnitzel's leash on, etc.
We finished up our registries at Target and Babies-r-Us. Our nursery theme is jungle animals. The quilt and bedding actually matches the yellow paint in the room, a nice plus!

So wonderfully blessed!

Well, the majority thought girl... but....

We had our 20-week ultrasound this morning and the Bug is a BOY... in fact the technician said "It's definitely a boy!" He weigh about 13 ounces and is about the size of a cantaloupe!

He's an active little guy; the past week I've really been able to feel the Bug's movements with lots of kicks, punches, or something! I never really felt the butterfly feeling... or at least I don't think I did. It was more of a thump! I've felt it with my hand on my belly but whenever Christopher comes over, the movement stops! Hopefully not too long! I also notice patterns in movement during the day. I read something interesting about 20 week babies on parentsconnect.com that said, "Your baby has established sleep patterns akin to a newborn now. Many babies even have a favorite sleep position already. Some snooze with their chins resting on their chests, while others nap with their head flung back. Many babies at this age fall into noticeable cycles of sleep and activity, so you may know before she arrives whether you have a night owl or an early bird.”
What a creative, detailed God we have!

Summer is here!

On May 31st, we went to Erin & Derek’s for swimming and burgers! It was fun to watch Joshua in the pool. My “non-maternity” bathing suit got it’s last go for a while; definitely not going to work when we go to Oak Island with the Taylors for the 4th of July weekend! Mom is going to go shopping with me next weekend to try to find a swim suit and some other items I need. Anyways, Derek decided to let Joshua try some gatorade... reminded me of when Evan Dean was going after Jason's Coke almost 2 years ago!

Speaking of the Deans... On June 7th they welcomed Emerson to their family! We went and visited wtih them that day and enjoyed chatting with Alisa and Jason while I held the sweet little girl. It was interesting to hear her birth story; it’s definitely put lots of thoughts in my mind about the Bug's labor and delivery.

I also closed the school year for the Class of 2019. The kids were crazy, but I survived. Five years done! I will have a break for a few weeks before Summer School starts. I'll have 15 kids or less for 16 days. It's Monday to Thursday with shorter hours. I decided to do this for 4 weeks over babysitting the entire summer.

This weekend I’ve also been cleaning out the office closet to make room for some of the things in the nursery closet. I hope to finish this task before Summer School starts.

Baby wise, here’s the scoop on Weeks 17 & 18! My clothes are getting tighter! I’m pretty much out of my old clothes. Erin loaned me her Bella Band. This “spandexy” fabric is holding up my pants that can't be buttoned & maternity pants that are still a little too big... my new favorite thing! Haha! (Thanks, Erin!) I've had some aches and pains, but other than that feeling GOOD! I’m anticipating feeling the baby move! Week 17 on the Bump.com described the Bug’s skeleton hardening, changing from rubbery cartilage to bone, and fat is finally accumulating around it. The umbilical cord is getting thicker and stronger, and those little fingers and toes are now topped by one-of-a-kind prints. For Week 18, it says the Bug is passing the hours yawning, hiccuping, rolling, twisting, kicking, punching, sucking and swallowing.

We find out if The Bug's a boy or a girl on June 24th! Can't wait!

Thoughts...

So of the many books I've been reading, one is Baby Wise. People seem to have strong feelings about it. I know I definitely want to establish some sort of schedule/routine. I'm only a couple chapters in but I do agree with the philosophies so far.
Any thoughts? Opinions?
Also curious... baby in your bedroom in a bassinet/etc... or in the nursery in the crib? The rooms are close in my house.

A Busy May

It's been a quite a busy month and it's not over yet!!!!

We've been working to finish up projects around the house. The kitchen is finished except for the flooring (we're waiting for it to go on sale at Lowes). Christopher installed a beadboard backsplash and it looks wonderful! We've also had some painting done around the house as well.... including the removal of the last bit of wallpaper from the previous owners in the master bath. It's been painted but not quite put back together yet. I absolutely love the kitchen!

The Teacher of the Year Banquet was on May 14th. Christopher, my parents, and my principal joined me. It was a lovely banquet! I was a semi-finalist on the county level... top 24!

My principal & I

Dr Burns & I... Dr Burns is the county's superintendent; he was my high school principal!
The weekend of May 16th was our Meredith College five year reunion! Amy and Jillian came in to town on Friday afternoon/evening. We went to Meredith later that evening for the PJ party with our class. Saturday Alisa joined us for lunch at my house! Saturday evening was a wonderful dinner at Cafe Luna with our class!

This week marks 16 weeks of pregnancy!
The Bug can now hear my voice! Eyebrows, lashes and hair are starting to fill in, and taste buds are forming. The Bug's arms and legs have functional joints. I’ve been feeling pretty good for the most part. The extreme tiredness has lifted a little and I have felt the nausea as much. For Mother's Day, Christopher took me out to eat after church to Bahama Breeze! We enjoyed coconut shrimp, roasted tomato Cuban break, and breeze salads! We also started talking about baby names... but we're keeping the baby's name a secret. Christopher says that until we can tell The Bug it's real name in person, no one else needs to know! This weekend I've been rearranging the soon-to-be nursery and office. With the help of my mom, we brought the crib, dresser, and changing table over that were my brother, sister, & I's when we were babies! I'm so excited to use them for the Bug! I've got the nursery furniture in place (at least for right now)... it's rather surreal -- as if my growing baby bump wasn't enough! The room is currently painted yellow and the furniture and picture bulletin board were what was already in the room. Once we find out if it's a boy or a girl then the real decorating can happen! We'll find out the middle of June! The day bed is now in the office and it's working out quite nicely. We had planned on just putting it in storage but with some rearranging now we still have 2 places guests can sleep!

Twelve Weeks!

We're twelve weeks along! The Bug is the size of a plum now and looking less "alien-like" as Christopher says. His nickname of "Paddle Bug" no longer really fits because baby's fingers and toes are seperating... no more webbed fingers and toes! Haha!

I had another doctor's visit this week. Didn't take long... barely even saw the doctor! My weight, blood pressure, everything was normal. The doctor used the doppler to hear the heartbeat. He found it right away and said it was a strong heartbeat for 12 weeks! I go back in 4 weeks; another 4 weeks after that (week of June 21) we'll find out the baby's gender. I've been feeling a lot better too! Haven't been sick in over a week... yea! I'm still sleeping a lot more but don't feel nearly as exhausted. My "baby bump" is also making its appearance. No more buttoning my pants. I've worn a couple "maternity" things, but mostly just still wearing things that work. I'm hoping the rubber band trick will work for just a little bit longer... just have to make sure my shirts are long enough!

Last weekend, Joshua came home for a friend's wedding and brought his girlfriend Ashley!

The next day, we all had brunch at Mom & Dad's house!
Afterwards we got the crib and changing table down that were my brother, sister, & I's when we were babies! I cleaned them up then we put them together! They were in great shape & we're going to use them for the Bug!

Joshua decided to put some cardboard in the bottom of the crib and stick Schnitzel in... the dog was not thrilled!

Oh the places we've been!

Pirate Country
When I went to visit my sister at ECU with my parents, she gave me us an ECU jersey for the Bug! We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at the Olive Garden!

Spring has sprung
I did a lot of work in our garden one Saturday morning and planted the new flowers I got from my mom for Easter! It looks A LOT better now!

The only thing missing was a train... but does a subway count?
On Wednesday, April 15th we set out for a journey to Bridgewater, Nova Scotia for Tim (Christopher's brother) & Amy's wedding! We took almost 3000 pictures on this trip (yes... 3000... yes, we love photography) so here's a just a tiny taste!
We flew to Portland, Maine then rented a car and began the driving journey. It was a beautiful drive through Maine and into New Brunswick, Canada. There were several lakes that were still frozen!

We spent the evening in Saint John, New Brunswick where we enjoyed a lobster dinner! Unfortunately I did not have my camera for that! The next morning we took a three-hour ferry ride to Nova Scotia then drove across the island to Bridgeport! The ferry trip was enjoyable along the coast (except for some morning sickness... oh well).

We had a couple days there before the wedding on Saturday! Thursday once we arrived in Bridgeport we went on a drive along the coast.

Friday evening we enjoyed a delicious dinner at the Fairview Inn. Christopher presented Amy with a "Top 10" of things she should know about Tim... hilarious!

The wedding day was gorgeous!

On Sunday morning, Sam, Christopher, & I set off for a road trip around Nova Scotia, through New Brunswick, and into Maine instead of taking the ferry back. We stopped in Bar Harbor, Maine and enjoyed Acadia National Park!

Our next stop was Boston on Monday! Sam had to catch his flight, but Christopher and I stayed behind for another day before our flight left Tuesday evening! We stayed at the Intercontinental Hotel and enjoyed exploring Boston (except for the rain)! The Boston Marathon was happening the day we got there... I don't think I will ever run a marathon... those people were hurting! We did enjoy a shrimp and crab cake dinner! We explored Beacon Hill and some of the Freedom Trail.

Time to go home...

The First Eight Weeks

I’ve been keeping a journal since then so I can remember everything! I’m completely fascinated with reading about how Baby is developing! Here’s some of what I’m willing to share…

February 27: Today we found out we’re pregnant! I have been “feeling pregnant”… can’t explain it… Totally went with the digital test… I didn’t want to be confused by all those lines or plus signs! I’m guessing that I’m about 3 or 4 weeks pregnant; not exactly sure how they calculate it as far as when the “count” starts. The baby is the size of a poppy seed right now! We got the poppy seeds out of the spice cabinet to see how small after the pregnant test came back “Yes!”. The baby’s heart will begin beating in the next few days, as well as blood beginning to circulate throughout the body. Your baby's first organ system will be up and running! All major systems are forming. I loved this quote: “Your baby's new digs—the amniotic sac and the placenta (aka the hotel and the restaurant)—are still forming at this point. All that high-speed development and your baby is only 2 millimeters long.” I can’t get enough of reading about our baby! How amazing!

March 2: So I almost appreciate the nausea… never thought I’d say that! Since baby is so small and this is such a fragile time, the nausea almost makes feel comforted that I really am pregnant. I feel GREAT in the morning so the whole phrase “morning sickness” is not so much for me. The late afternoon and evening is usually when I start to feel yucky. I’m hoping this pattern will continue if I’m going to feel this way so that I can get through the school day okay. I spoke with my nurse today. In 2 weeks I go for my first prenatal appointment. In a little over 4 weeks we’ll go for our first ultrasound and to hear the heartbeat! I can’t wait for that! Despite the “yes” on the pregnancy test and the physical changes I’m experiencing, I think it will feel more real then! I am praying our baby is healthy. There are so many emotions now… excitement… anticipation… fear… and back to excitement again.

March 15: Baby has a new nickname… The Bug! We like to watch Private Practice and one of the characters is pregnant; she calls her baby Bug. So for the past week or so, that’s been the baby’s new nickname! My sister spent the night last night. It was rather interesting because I was having a really hard time with nausea on Saturday morning. I think we hid it pretty well! I can’t wait to be able to tell her! She will be ecstatic! Pre-natal appointment is tomorrow! I’m so excited even though not much will happen!

March 22: I’m definitely not wondering if I’m pregnant anymore. Fortunately the bad days have corresponded with the weekend so work’s been okay for the most part. Name of the game = exhausted! I have slept SO much this weekend and yet I still feel exhausted! I’ve also been sleeping a lot better at night. I have to pee a lot… but right now I only have to get up once during the night. Fortunately I’ve been able to go right back to sleep. Nausea has been not-so-great. And yet I know that it’s not near as bad as what other women experience. I had to leave church this morning a couple times feeling like I'm going to be sick. Sometimes I wonder if I’d just feel better if I throw up. However, I had noticed some patterns. I need to eat something every 3-4 hours. The nausea seems to come on when I haven’t eaten. Also the nausea subsides when I eat. It takes a longer if I’m feeling really bad but for the most part eating helps. I guess my hormone levels are increasing! Cravings… not sure if they count but when I’m hungry sometimes there’s something I really want… like today it was a baked potato and chicken nuggets. Once it’s in my head, I can’t think about anything else. The other day it was pizza! On Monday, I had my pre-natal appointment. We talked to the pre-natal nurse. She gave us lots of information & I had LOTS of blood taken; kind of scary how much! Surprisingly I had no trouble with that despite my syncope condition. The nurse suggested I take my pre-natal vitamin at night instead of in the morning to help with nausea… thought it was helping but then this weekend hasn’t been so great. During week 6, the Bug’s eyes, ears, nose, cheeks, and chin started to grow. Since it’s hands and feet are like paddles, Christopher’s been calling it “Paddle Bug.” The heart is beating twice as fast as mine and blood is starting to circulate. This coming week, the Paddle Bug’s brain is growing fast… about 100 new cells every minute! Arms and legs are emerging as joints start to form. A permanent set of kidneys is now there too; thebump.com said this is the baby’s third. The baby’s face is more defined and a tiny mouth hole, tongue, nostrils, and ear indentations are visible. Paddle Bug’s eyes are open wide but there are no irises yet. The umbilical cord is now visible. Even though so tiny, Paddle Bug is 10,000 times bigger than at conception! Praise the Lord!

March 26: What a crazy week it’s been! Monday we went to the Kids Everywear consignment sale in search of a crib. We didn’t have any luck there… but did get found out by Alisa! I was hoping to make it in & out pretty quick… just in case… but that didn’t happen! So Alisa knows now which is such fun, but I really was looking forward to a clever way to tell her we’re pregnant! We’re pregnant together after all! Last night they had us over for dinner & playing Wii. She gave us our first baby gift too… an adorable sleeper set with little ducks all over it and a very soft Winnie the Pooh blanket. Yesterday we also had another surprise… Tuesday I was experiencing sharp pains on both sides near my belly button. I called the doctor and they wanted to see me yesterday for an ultrasound. Turns out everything’s fine; the doctor said it was probably just some ligaments stretching. Nothing major! It turned out to be just a sweet treat to see our Bug a week early! It was absolutely amazing… Christopher laughed & I cried... haha! The ultrasound technician was able to get a close-up of the heart and we could see the valves moving and it pumping.... AMAZING! We could see the little arm buds, the spine, the yolk sack (current source of food), and the developing placenta. Everything (me and baby) looked normal! The Bug is actually 4 days ahead as far as growth with respect to the projected due date. I felt such a huge relief! We still go next week for our originally scheduled appointment and will get to see The Bug again! It was fun to share the pictures with Alisa later that evening! We plan to tell our families this weekend!

April 4: Telling our family and friends has been so much fun! Wednesday morning we had our second ultrasound! It wasn’t as close-up as the first because it was on the mobile machine (rather than the permanent machine like last week). I started telling my school friends as soon as I got back to school! I wish I could have had a video camera taping my students as I told them about the Bug. I knew they'd be excited, but I didn't realize quite how much!

Once they guessed the letters in the message, here were some of their comments...

  • "Do we have to be quiet so we don't wake up the baby?"
  • "Mrs. McLendon... I feel sorry for you... my stopmom says it hurts... bad"
  • "Why aren't you fat yet?"
  • "Can you make the baby be born soon?"
  • "Where is the baby now?" (Implying why don't I have a baby bump yet.... I had to get a penny to explain to the child how small baby actually is right now!)
  • "Can I come to your baby shower? My mom says it's okay."
  • "Now you will have 21 kids!"
One of my children has pretty much informed everyone he sees that I'm having a baby. He got to several people before I could! And of course, several want the baby named after them!

This week The Bug turned eight weeks old and is the size of a raspberry! The Bug is growing about a millimeter every day and continuing to straighten out in the trunk. The Bug is moving those little arms, legs and (now only slightly) webbed fingers and toes like crazy. Elbows have begun to form in the arms and the legs begin to show feet with tiny notches for the toes. The face continues to change as the ears, eyes, eyelids, upper lip, and tip of the nose appear. Teeth are developing under the gums! The heart has four chambers now and is beating twice as fast as mine. I’m getting slightly bigger… I’ve got a pooch & am definitely more comfortably in roomy clothes! I definitely feel tightness of my muscles in my belly. I’ve been feeling a lot better as far as the nausea! I’m still feeling tired and lethargic… and have to pee a lot!

We're pregnant!!!!

We wanted to share that our family is growing to three soon! We found out in February that we're pregnant with a little one! Baby McLendon's due date is November 10 (I'm 8 weeks along). We are so excited & thanking God for our little blessing!

I promise this is not an April Fool's joke... see the pictures to prove it!!! :) We actually had an ultrasound last week and one today! We were able to watch our little Bug wiggling around. I was amazed when the technician zoomed in on the heart and you could see the beating heart. We were able to see the little paddles that will be arms (hence Christopher's current nickname... Paddle Bug) & the beginnings of a spine! I was crying & Christopher was laughing... praise the Lord! We started sharing with family & friends over the weekend... such fun for it not to be a secret anymore!

Week 7 Ultrasound (3.25.09)

Week 8 Ultrasound (4.1.09)

I'll post more later but for the most part, feeling great!!!! Praise the Lord!!!
